Short and honest
Four questions, four clear answers
Do I really have to register her? She only comes every two weeks.
Yes, from the first franc.
There is no minimum threshold in a private household, not even during the trial period. The only exception: at most CHF 750 in wages per year, up to and including the year your cleaner turns 25.
What does it cost me in the end, all in?
Hourly wage plus roughly a sixth on top. Plus CHF 19.90 for Clino.
That covers the 8.33 % holiday supplement and your contributions for AHV, IV, EO, ALV, occupational accident insurance and family allowances. The calculator further down shows the exact amount for your canton.
The registration goes to the compensation office of the canton you live in, within one month of the first working day. You may pay wages before that. After that, by 30 January each year, you report the previous year's total wages. Clino pre-fills, you sign and send.
And what if I just leave it?
Inspections are rare. You pay anyway.
In 2025 there were 239 inspections of private households in the whole of Switzerland. It gets expensive even without an inspection: if your cleaner falls off a ladder, the Ersatzkasse UVG pays her benefits and bills you for up to 5 years of missed premiums. AHV also claims contributions back for 5 years, plus a fine of up to CHF 10'000.

She has health insurance. If something happens, she is covered.
Accidents at work are not her health insurer's business. They fall under accident insurance, which you as the employer have to take out: from the first hour for occupational accidents, and from 8 hours a week for her free time as well. If she is not insured, the Ersatzkasse UVG steps in for your cleaner and bills you for up to 5 years of premiums. Whether cover applies retroactively is handled differently by each insurer: register before she comes for the first time.
With ClinoIn the simplified procedure plus, accident insurance runs through your compensation office. Clino shows you where to tick the box.
«
She has a permit B. Taxes are her business, aren't they?
No, yours. In the simplified procedure you deduct 5 % withholding tax from the gross wage and pass it on to the compensation office with the annual wage declaration, whatever her permit, even with a permit C or a Swiss passport. As the employer, you are liable for this tax. Your cleaner receives a certificate from the office for her tax return.
With ClinoThe 5 % appear on every payslip, and the annual wage declaration is prepared for you.
«
She also cleans for three other families. Surely someone has registered her already.
Each household is its own employer: its own registration, its own payslip, its own accident cover. An invoice does not make anyone self-employed; the compensation office decides that, not the paperwork. Without registration, your cleaner builds up no AHV years; an estimated 73'000 women in Switzerland are in this situation.
With ClinoYou register your household, in 5 minutes. What the other families do remains their duty.

UNDECLAREDThe dark reality.
✕No contract: in a dispute, only what you both remember counts
✕Accident: the substitute fund pays, you owe 5 years of premiums
✕AHV: 5 years of back contributions, fine up to CHF 10'000
REGISTEREDThe bright reality.
✓NAV contract: holidays, notice and sick pay settled
Estimate using a national average FAK. Your exact cantonal rate is built into Clino.
Do it yourself or with Clino?
Both are legal. The difference is your time and the error rate.
On your own, this is how it works
1Find the compensation office of the canton you live in: what counts is where you live, not where she works. Each office has its own form or uses the federal form.
2Fill in the registration, actively tick the simplified procedure plus for accident insurance, submit it and wait for your account number.
3Calculate every month yourself: 8.33 % holiday supplement, AHV and ALV shares, occupational accident, your canton's FAK rate, 5 % withholding tax (for everyone in the simplified procedure, even with a permit C or a Swiss passport).
4Report the annual wages by 30 January and pay the office's invoice within 30 days, otherwise you risk being excluded from the procedure.
Nothing is charged before day 30. Cancel monthly. No power of attorney and no commission: you sign and send yourself, Clino prepares.
Been at it for a while?
Your cleaner has been coming for months or years already? Then now is the cheapest moment.
If you register yourself, you pay the AHV contributions for the past years, at most 5 years, plus 5 % default interest. Clino issues the contract and registration from today; the past is something you discuss with the compensation office, and we help you with the wording via WhatsApp.
Nothing is charged before day 30. Cancel monthly. You sign and send yourself, Clino prepares.
Tools, free to use
Before you register, these calculators help
Not sure yet which wage to offer or whether you're required to register? These four tools answer the most common pre-registration questions, no sign-up needed.
Do I really have to register my cleaner if she only comes 4 hours a week?
Yes, in a private household the AHV registration obligation applies from the first franc. At 4 hours a week at CHF 30 over 50 weeks, that is CHF 6'000 a year, so you clearly have to register. The only exception: at most CHF 750 in wages per year, up to and including the year your cleaner turns 25, and only if she waives it.
What is the simplified procedure, and where is the limit?
The flat-rate solution for private households: AHV, IV, EO, ALV, 5 % withholding tax and, in the «plus» version, accident insurance too are all settled with a single annual statement at your compensation office. All 26 cantons offer the plus, but you have to actively request it. The limit: CHF 22'680 in wages per person and year, CHF 60'480 for the whole household. Anyone who exceeds it during the year is settled under the ordinary procedure for the entire year (reply from SVA Graubünden, August 2026). With a cleaner working 4 hours a week, you are a long way from that.
You continue to pay her wages for a limited time, even on an hourly wage: three weeks in the first year of service, then according to the scale customary in your canton (Bern, Basel or Zurich scale). During illness and pregnancy, once the trial period is over, she is protected against dismissal for a limited time. The Clino contract sets out both, so there is no dispute when it matters.
The compensation office of the canton you live in, not the one where she works. In the canton of Zurich that is SVA Zürich, in the canton of Bern the Ausgleichskasse des Kantons Bern, in Geneva the OCAS. Clino identifies it automatically from your postcode.
What happens if I want to register retroactively?
Possible, and usually the cheaper route. The compensation office claims contributions back for up to 5 years, with default interest. If your cleaner was not insured against accidents, the Ersatzkasse UVG bills the missing premiums for at most 5 years (Art. 95 UVG).
Nothing is charged before day 30. Cancel monthly. You sign and send yourself, Clino prepares.
