What you're legally entitled to: even if you look after the children only 2 hours a week.
Fair wage per canton
According to the Swiss Nanny Association, CHF 25–40 gross an hour is typical, depending on experience. Your canton's minimum wage is only the floor.
Paid holidays
At least 4 weeks per year (5 weeks if under 20; from 50 depending on the cantonal NAV).
Pay when sick
Your family must pay you even when sick (Bernese scale, etc.).
Accident insurance (UVG)
Mandatory from the first hour of work: paid by the family.
Notice period
7 days during probation, then 1 month in year 1, 2 months from year 2.
Written contract
Hours, pay, holidays. In writing. No contract = you still have rights (CO).
Childcare has its own rules
The pack works for you too. These four points belong in every nanny contract.
Overtime is paid
If you work more than agreed, the law gives you a 25% supplement or, if you both agree, time off of equal length (Art. 321c OR). Waiving it only counts in writing. Your canton's NAV can set more for Sundays and public holidays.
No banked hours
If the family doesn't need you because they are on holiday or a child is ill, you still get your full wage. Minus hours or "banking hours" are not allowed (Art. 324 OR).
An au pair is not a nanny
Au pair means: at most 30 hours a week, room and board, a language course, and a parent at home at least half the time. If you work more or alone with the children, you are a nanny, even if you live with the family.
Full time means a pension fund
If you earn more than CHF 22'680 a year with one family, the pension fund (BVG) is mandatory. The pack includes it in the numbers for your employer.

Typical market rates, according to the Swiss Nanny Association

Afraid to ask your family?
We get it. Here are the three most common worries and what actually happens.
"If I bring it up, the family will just find another nanny."
Firing you in retaliation for a legitimate request is abusive (CO art. 336). You can claim up to 6 months' wages in compensation (CO art. 336a). And families who trust you with their kids don't casually swap you out over a registration request. Plus, the notice period applies. You have time to find a new position.
"I'm just an au pair or don't have a permit: that doesn't count as a real job."
It does count: if you regularly look after children for pay, beyond au pair pocket money, you're legally an employee and must be registered. The AHV office also does NOT routinely report registrations to migration authorities. If you have a permit, nothing changes. If not, talk to a counselling service (Caritas, FIZ). They know paths that don't put your safety at risk.
"It feels wrong to ask this of a family I see as my own."
