"If I bring it up, the family will just find another nanny."
Firing you in retaliation for a legitimate request is abusive (CO art. 336). You can claim up to 6 months' wages in compensation (CO art. 336a). And families who trust you with their kids don't casually swap you out over a registration request. Plus, the notice period applies — you have time to find a new position.
"I'm just an au pair or don't have a permit — that doesn't count as a real job."
It does count: if you regularly look after children for pay — beyond au pair pocket money — you're legally an employee and must be registered. The AHV office also does NOT routinely report registrations to migration authorities. If you have a permit, nothing changes. If not, talk to a counselling service (Caritas, FIZ) — they know paths that don't put your safety at risk.
