The payslip is ready - what now?
A payslip does not belong in your archive first. It belongs in her hands.
- 1Hand one over every month: your household employee is entitled to a payslip for every wage payment (Art. 323b CO). Paper or PDF does not matter, receiving it does.
- 2Send it with the payment: the payslip and the transfer belong together. If you only settle up at year end you cannot evidence the deductions in a dispute.
- 3Keep a copy for five years: keep every payslip until five years after the last working day. Wage claims can be raised for that long (Art. 128 CO) and the compensation office asks for them during checks.
- 4Build the salary certificate from them in January: the twelve payslips become the salary certificate for the tax return. A month missing here is a month missing there.
Mandatory details
Both names, the accounting month, gross wage, holiday supplement, every single deduction (OASI/DI/EO, unemployment, non-occupational accident, plus withholding tax and pension where they apply) and the net amount paid.
Most common mistake
Transferring the net amount and never issuing a payslip. Your employee cannot check the deductions, and during an inspection you cannot show that you passed them on.

What must be on the payslip?

Every payslip for domestic workers must itemise the following positions:
- ✓Base wage - Hours x hourly rate
- ✓Holiday supplement - 8.33% (4 weeks), 10.64% (5 weeks) or 13.04% (6 weeks)
- ✓OASI/DI/IC - 5.3% employee share
- ✓UI - 1.1% unemployment insurance
- ✓NBUV - 1.432% non-occupational accident insurance (from 8h/week)
- ✓Withholding tax - 5% in the simplified procedure
- ✓Net wage - Payout amount
On the employer side, the same OASI/DI/IC and UI contributions apply, plus occupational accident insurance (0.505%) and FAK (family allowance fund, varies by canton). Our generator calculates all positions automatically.
The simplified billing procedure
Private households in Switzerland can use the simplified billing procedure if the wage does not exceed CHF 22,680 per year per employee. This means:
Lump-sum billing: You report the wage once a year to the cantonal compensation office. It collects all contributions (OASI, UI, accident insurance, FAK) in a single invoice.
Flat 5% withholding tax: In the simplified procedure, the withholding tax is a flat 5%. This replaces regular income tax for the employee.
No tax return required: Income from the simplified procedure does not need to be declared in the employee's tax return.
More in our step-by-step registration guide. The responsible compensation office depends on your canton of residence - on our cantonal overview you will find the right office with direct links.
Common payslip mistakes
Forgetting the holiday supplement
The holiday supplement must be shown and paid out separately every month - not just at year-end.
Treating net pay as gross pay
If you agreed on a net wage, you must first calculate back to the gross wage. Our generator handles both.
Not deducting NBUV
From 8 hours per week with the same employer, non-occupational accident insurance is mandatory (1.432% employee share).
No payslip provided
The employee is entitled to a monthly, written payslip. Tip: Send it by email or as a PDF.
