An elderly woman's hands — care work is real work with the same rights

A message for you

Your work carries this country.

Switzerland is getting older — and without caregivers like you, many people couldn't grow old at home. You have the same rights as any other employee: no matter where you're from, whether you help a few hours a week or are there around the clock.

Off the books vs. registered

Wage by canton

What do you earn in your canton?

Pick your canton — we show the typical gross wage for private senior care and the legal minimum wage (where one exists).

Typical gross wage, senior care
CHF 2937/ hour
Market estimate — additionally, the federal domestic-work NAV applies nationwide: min. CHF 20.35/h (2026).

Earning less? That's wage dumping.

What if …

Afraid to ask your family?

We get it — especially if you live with the family. Here are the three most common worries — and what actually happens.

"If I ask to be registered, I lose my job AND my room."

What actually happens

Firing you in retaliation for a legitimate request is abusive (CO art. 336) — you can claim up to 6 months' wages. And even if they give notice, the notice period applies: you may stay in your room until it ends and you have time to find a new position.

"I'll be reported or deported."

What actually happens

The AHV office does NOT routinely report registrations to migration authorities. If you have a permit (including as a circular migrant from the EU), nothing changes. If not, talk to a counselling service (Caritas, FIZ) — they know paths that don't put your safety at risk.

"The family will be overwhelmed — it'll get complicated."

What actually happens

Most families simply don't know how — often it's the adult children organising their parents' care on top of their own jobs. With Clino, registration takes 5 minutes and costs CHF 19.90/month. Frame it as relief, not a demand. The generator below drafts the message kindly.

Ask your family to register you

Send a clear, friendly message — we draft it for you. WhatsApp or email.

Hi [Employer name],

I wanted to ask if we can sort out the AHV registration. It's a legal requirement and protects us both — you're covered if something happens to me during care work, and I build up pension years.

It's easier than it sounds: clino.ch prepares everything automatically (contract, payslip, registration). Costs CHF 19.90/month.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does my night presence count as working time?
Yes. If you must be present at night and available on call, that's not free time — it must be set out in the contract and compensated (in money or time off). The rate may be lower than for active work, but "free" is not permissible. If your contract says nothing about it, raise it — the message generator above helps you.
I live with the family — how do board and lodging count?
Free room and meals are wages in kind: they count toward your AHV-liable wage at CHF 990 per month (CHF 33 per day). That's good for you — your insured wage and future pension go up. The family may not simply deduct a fantasy rent from your pay.
Do I need a nursing qualification to care for seniors?
For companionship and daily-life support (company, cooking, shopping, outings) you need no qualification. Medical care (preparing medication, wound care) belongs to licensed professionals — you may not and must not take it on. The Swiss Red Cross care-assistant course is a good first step if you want more responsibility and pay.
Am I entitled to a pension fund (BVG)?
Yes, as soon as you earn more than CHF 22,680 per year with one family (2026). In full-time care that's practically always the case — the family must then enrol you in a pension fund in addition to AHV. That's your 2nd pillar and makes a big difference in old age.
Agency or private employment — what's the difference?
With an agency (staff leasing), the agency is your employer — it needs a SECO licence and pays your social insurance. In private employment, the family is your employer and must register you themselves (AHV, UVG, possibly BVG). Both are legal — what matters is that SOMEONE registers you. This page helps with the private model; with Clino the family sorts everything in 5 minutes.
I'm from the EU and commute for care stints — does all this apply to me too?
Yes. Even if you only work in Switzerland in blocks of weeks or months (e.g. 2-week rotations), you're employed here: the family must register you, pay you at least the NAV wage, and insure you. With a B or L permit, withholding tax is deducted directly from your wage — a flat 5% in the simplified procedure.
Can I care for several seniors / households?
Yes, that's common — many caregivers work by the hour for several households. Each household must register you separately and pay contributions for their hours. With Clino, all your families get the same registration link.
What does Clino cost me?
For caregivers, Clino is 100% free. The family pays (CHF 19.90/month).
