What the law requires
Anyone employing household help in a Swiss private household is an employer under the AHVA (Art. 12) — whether for cleaning, childcare or senior care. From the first franc, registration with the cantonal compensation office is mandatory — the CHF 2,300 small-wage threshold does not apply in a private household. Only wages of employees under 25, up to CHF 750/year, can stay exempt on request.
Unregistered employment counts as undeclared work (BGSA, AHVG Art. 88). Inspections lead to fines of up to CHF 10,000 plus back-payment of all social contributions for the last 5 years (AHV, ALV, FAK, UVG) — plus 5% default interest.

Frequently asked questions — Switzerland-wide
Do I really have to register my household help if she only comes 4 hours a week?
Yes — in a private household the AHV obligation applies from the first franc, whatever the role. At 4h/week × CHF 30/h × 50 weeks = CHF 6,000/year you're clearly required to register anyway. (Only wages of employees under 25, up to CHF 750/year, can stay exempt on request.)
Does this apply equally to a cleaner, a nanny and senior care?
Yes. Cleaning, childcare and elder care in a private household are treated the same for social insurance: you are the employer and register with the cantonal compensation office. Contribution rates are identical; only the market wages and a few obligations (e.g. child-protection authority for childcare) differ.
What is the simplified procedure?
A lump-sum process for private households: AHV, IV, EO, ALV, withholding tax and sometimes UVG are settled together in a single annual statement to the cantonal compensation office. Condition: max wage CHF 22,680 per year per employer.
Which compensation office is responsible?
The cantonal office of the employer's residence canton. In Zürich e.g. SVA Zürich (AHVeasy portal), in Bern SVA Bern, in Geneva OCAS. Clino detects it automatically from your postcode.
What about registering retroactively?
Possible and even recommended before an inspection. The compensation office will demand contributions for the past 5 years, possibly with interest. The undeclared-work fine is waived if you come forward voluntarily.
What does Clino cost?
CHF 19.90 per month — flat, regardless of how many payslips or employees. First 30 days free. Cancel monthly, no hidden fees.
