Research & theses
Open data on household work in Switzerland. For research, teaching and theses.
There are few official statistics on employment in private households. How many households register their domestic worker, what a nanny costs compared with daycare, how often households are inspected: these figures were in no report, or only scattered across tables of the federal offices. Clino analyses them and publishes each analysis as an open dataset.

Topics for bachelor's and master's theses
Each topic rests on an open dataset. The questions are open; we have no answer we want confirmed.
1. The registration gap
Zurich registers 31.3 employers per 1,000 private households in the simplified procedure, Basel-Landschaft 6.6, under the same federal law. Inspection density does not explain the difference. What does?
2. Chèque-emploi versus the simplified procedure
In Vaud, 10,976 employers pay through Chèques-emploi, while 1,421 appear in the simplified procedure. Which registration route works how, and why?
3. Inspections in households
Undeclared-work inspections in private households fell from 693 (2021) to 239 (2025), while across all sectors they rose by 19.8 %. Why?
4. The flat-rate tax
At a monthly wage of CHF 1,000, the flat rate of 5 % in the simplified procedure costs the domestic worker CHF 444 to 600 a year more than the ordinary tariff; a spouse from a well-off household saves up to CHF 4,022. The distributional effects of a simplification.
5. The multiple-employer trap
The BVG threshold applies per employer: someone who works for four households builds up no second-pillar pension despite an income of CHF 24,000. How many people with several jobs does this affect?
6. Nanny or daycare
From the second child on, a legally employed nanny costs less than two daycare places in Bern and Basel. What changes with the new childcare allowance of at least CHF 500 per child and month, which only funds daycare centres, day schools and organised childminder networks?

7. The babysitting market
11,620 listings in 23 cantons: median CHF 20 to 30 an hour, French-speaking Switzerland and Ticino 25 % cheaper than German-speaking Switzerland. What drives the rates?
8. Domestic workers of diplomats
At least CHF 1,200 net for 45 hours a week, not indexed since 2011: with board and lodging, 47 % of the Geneva minimum wage. A wage regime of its own, next to the cantonal minimum wages.
9. Premiums and low wages
A domestic worker on the legal minimum wage works 31.1 hours a month in Ticino just to pay the average health insurance premium, in Zug 16.6. What does that mean for premium subsidies and minimum-wage policy?
10. The online childcare market
26,783 childcare listings on the largest platform: what web data show about a market no statistic counts, and where their limits lie.
