In 7 of 26 cantons you can hand the registration of your household help over to an office: the chèque emploi, called «Chèque service» in Geneva. All of them are in French-speaking Switzerland and Ticino, each works a little differently and most charge 5 to 7 % of the wage. Here you see them all on a map, in a table and in a profile, with what speaks for and against each one, and in an honest comparison with Clino.
How a chèque emploi works
A chèque emploi is not a voucher but a service: an office takes over, for you as the employer, the registration with the compensation office, the social contributions and the insurances. In return you pay an administration fee as a percentage of the wage. The process is similar everywhere:
Stop 1 · Sign up
Important: the fee only pays for the administration. Social contributions (AHV/IV/EO, ALV, family allowances) and insurance premiums are due in any case, with or without an office. And no office is mandatory: even in Geneva or Lausanne you may register directly with the compensation office.
All offices in one table
Calculated with an example: 4 hours a week at CHF 30, so CHF 520 gross wage a month. «Per year» shows only the administration fee, without one-off joining fees.

Register the employment with the cantonal compensation office.
Take out UVG accident insurance (from 8 h/week also covering non-occupational accidents).
Produce a payslip every month and declare the wages at year-end.
Chèque emploi or Clino?
Both take work off your hands, but in different ways. The office takes over the administration by mandate and charges a percentage of the wage for it. Clino prepares everything, you sign and submit it yourself, for a flat price. Side by side:

Clino suits you if ...
your canton has no office, your help works more than a few hours a week (then the flat price is lower), you want neither to prepay nor to give a power of attorney, or someone already works for you and you need to sort that out retroactively.
No office in your canton, or too expensive?
Clino prepares the registration, the employment contract and every payslip, in all 26 cantons, for CHF 19.90/month. No prepayment, no power of attorney, 30 days free.

Which cantons have a chèque emploi?
In 7 cantons: Geneva (Chèque service), Vaud (EPER), Valais (Top relais), Fribourg, Neuchâtel (TickeTAC), Jura (Caritas Jura, also in the Bernese Jura) and Ticino (PrAmAsSa). The other 19 cantons have no such office.
What does a chèque emploi cost?
Mostly 5 to 7 % of the gross wage as an administration fee, with a minimum and a cap depending on the office (in Neuchâtel the rate falls to 3 %). Social contributions and insurance premiums come on top, as with any other solution.
Is the chèque emploi mandatory?
No, it is a voluntary service. What is mandatory is registering your household help with the AHV from the first franc and insuring them against accidents. You can do that directly with the compensation office anywhere, too.
Can I use another canton's chèque emploi?
No. Each office only accepts households from its own area. What counts is where you live as the employer, not where your household help lives. In Valais a second home is enough.
From what wage is Clino cheaper than a chèque emploi?
Clino costs CHF 238.80 a year. With a 5 % fee, Clino is cheaper from about CHF 400 gross wage a month, with 7 % from about CHF 285. The calculator above shows it for your workload.
Is there a chèque emploi in German-speaking Switzerland too?
Not today. Basel had a «Chèque Service Basel» from about 2020 to 2023, which was discontinued for lack of demand. In the German-speaking part of Fribourg, Chèque Emploi Fribourg is also available in German. Otherwise you register directly with the cantonal compensation office, often under the simplified procedure. Clino prepares this registration for you.
