Why you must register your private tutor

If you regularly employ a private tutor and pay them directly, you are the employer — and you must account for AHV/IV/EO, ALV and accident insurance from the very first franc of wages. Teaching isn't classic domestic work like cleaning or gardening; what matters is whether the tutor is recognised as self-employed — if they aren't, the duty to settle contributions falls to you.

Exception: if the tutor is self-employed or works through a tutoring agency that invoices you, they settle their own contributions — then you have nothing to register. But if you pay someone directly and regularly and they are not recognised as self-employed, you are the employer — and you carry the responsibility.

With the simplified procedure, withholding tax and social contributions are settled together — no separate tax deduction needed.

Our daughter has maths tutoring twice a week. I had no idea I had to register her tutor — with Clino it was done in one evening.

Common questions about registering a private tutor

Do I have to register my private tutor with the AHV?

Yes, if you employ and pay them directly and they are not recognised as self-employed — then you owe AHV from the first franc. For very small, occasional amounts special low-wage rules can apply, but regular tutoring quickly exceeds them. When in doubt, register.

What if the tutor is self-employed or works through an agency?

If a tutor recognised as self-employed or a tutoring agency invoices you, they settle their own contributions. In that case you have nothing to register.

What does registering via Clino cost?

CHF 19.90 per month — a flat fee, no matter how many hours your tutor teaches. The first 30 days are free.

My tutor teaches several families — is she self-employed?

Not automatically. Someone who works for several families is still an employee — of each family separately. Only an official self-employed status granted by the compensation office changes that.

Do I need to think about accident insurance?

Yes. Every employee must be insured against accidents — that applies to a tutor teaching at home too. With Clino the accident insurance is calculated and documented automatically.

Trying costs nothing.
