Why you must register your gardener
Anyone working for a private household — including in the garden — counts as a domestic employee. You must account for AHV/IV/EO, ALV and accident insurance from the very first franc of wages, exactly as for a cleaner.
Exception: if you hire a landscaping company that invoices you and is recognised as self-employed, you have nothing to register. But if you pay someone directly and regularly, you are the employer — and you carry the responsibility.
With the simplified procedure, withholding tax and social contributions are settled together — no separate tax deduction needed.
Our gardener comes every two weeks for the lawn and hedges. I had no idea I had to register him — with Clino it was done in one evening.

Common questions about registering a gardener
Do I have to register my gardener with the AHV?
Yes, if you employ him directly. Garden work for a private household counts as domestic work and is subject to AHV from the first franc — even for just a few hours a month.
What if a landscaping company comes instead?
If a company or a person recognised as self-employed invoices you, they settle their own contributions. In that case you have nothing to register.
What does registering via Clino cost?
CHF 19.90 per month — a flat fee, no matter how many hours your gardener works. The first 30 days are free.
My gardener works for several households — is he self-employed?
No. Someone who works for several private households is still an employee — of each household separately. Only an official self-employed status granted by the compensation office changes that.
What happens in case of an accident?
Garden work is accident-prone — ladders, hedge trimmers, chainsaws. Without accident insurance you are personally liable for all costs. With Clino the accident insurance is calculated and documented automatically.
Trying costs nothing.
