The short answer

Your PERMIT decides whether you can work. Not the job. EU/EFTA citizens have full free movement. In Switzerland, C, family-B, F and S can work anywhere (F/S: the employer just notifies). From a third country abroad there's essentially no route into household work. Except au pair, a diplomat's household, family reunification or asylum.

Never work cash-in-hand

Undeclared cash costs you AHV pension, accident insurance and unemployment cover and both sides risk back-payments. Insist on being declared.

On platform leads, the family declares you

You're only insured if the household actually registers you (AHV from the first franc). Ask to see the compensation office's confirmation.

Can I work as a cleaner, nanny or carer in Switzerland?▾

It depends on your permit, not the job. EU/EFTA citizens have full free movement. In Switzerland, C, family-B and recognised refugees can work freely; with F or S the employer only notifies the canton (no authorisation). From a third country abroad there's essentially no ordinary route into basic household work.

How much does household help earn in Switzerland?▾

The legal minimum (NAV Hauswirtschaft 2026) is CHF 20.35 to 24.55/h; Geneva is CHF 24.59 and Basel-Stadt 22.20. In practice private households often pay CHF 27–35/h, highest in Zurich and Zug.

Do I have to be declared and what's in it for me?▾

Yes. From the first franc the household pays AHV and accident insurance. Being declared secures your pension, accident and unemployment cover. With Clino the family can declare you easily and it's free for you.
