The calculation uses the simplified procedure with a flat 5% withholding tax. For gross wages above CHF 22'680/year, settlement runs through the ordinary procedure. Clino detects this automatically.

What do gross, net and employer cost mean?

Gross wage

This is the wage before deduction of social insurance and withholding tax. The gross wage appears in the employment contract and the salary statement.

Net wage (what the nanny receives)

From the gross wage, AHV/IV/EO (5.3%), ALV (1.1%), above 8 hours/week UVG-NBU (1.432%) and, in the simplified procedure, a flat 5% withholding tax are deducted. The remainder is transferred to the nanny's account.

Total employer cost

On top of the gross wage come the employer contributions (AHV/IV/EO 5.3%, ALV 1.1%, UVG-BU 0.5%, FAK depending on the canton 1.025 to 2.75%) plus the Clino flat fee of CHF 19.90/month. This is what the nanny actually costs you per month.

13th-month salary and Sunday supplement

The 13th-month salary is not legally required but is standard for full-time nannies. Sunday or evening supplements are not mandatory under the NAV domestic work. We recommend agreeing them clearly in the contract (e.g. +25% per Sunday hour).

Frequently asked questions

How is a nanny's net wage calculated in Switzerland?
From the gross wage, AHV/IV/EO (5.3%), ALV (1.1%), above 8 hours/week UVG-NBU (1.432%) and, in the simplified procedure, the withholding tax (5%) are deducted. In Vaud and Valais a small employee FAK share is added. The result is the net wage the nanny is paid.
What does a nanny really cost the employer?
On top of the gross wage come employer contributions (AHV/IV/EO 5.3%, ALV 1.1%, UVG-BU approx. 0.5%, FAK depending on the canton 1.025 to 2.75%), roughly 8 to 12% extra. For a nanny on CHF 5'200 gross, expect around CHF 5'700 to 5'800 total cost per month plus the Clino flat fee.
Do I need a 13th-month salary for a nanny?
No, the 13th-month salary is not legally required in Switzerland, nor under the NAV domestic work. It is, however, common in the nanny sector, especially for full-time roles. If you agree it, it must be in the employment contract and increases social contributions proportionally.
How do weekend and evening hours affect the wage?
Under the NAV domestic work, Sunday supplements are not mandatory, but in many nanny contracts they are common (typically +25% to +50% on the hourly wage). We recommend fixing the supplements in the contract, either as an hourly supplement or as a monthly flat amount.
At what wage does the simplified procedure no longer pay off?
The simplified settlement procedure (VAV) applies up to CHF 22'680 gross wage per year and person. If a full-time nanny is above this (which is usually the case), registration runs through the ordinary procedure with individual withholding tax. Clino detects the threshold automatically.
