If the au pair comes from a third country, placement through a licensed organisation is mandatory.

You don't need an agency for an au pair from the EU/EFTA. For an au pair from a third country, placement through a licensed organisation is mandatory (Art. 48 VZAE).

How do you spot a reputable agency?

  • Listed in SECO's register (avg-seco.admin.ch), mandatory for third countries
  • All fees before you sign, including what applies if it ends early
  • Contract template with hours, pocket money, board and lodging, language course
  • A fixed contact person during the stay, for the au pair too
  • A clear rule if the match fails: replacement or refund
  • IAPA or an association: a plus, but no substitute for the licence

Walk away from advance payments without a contract, or from claims that your employer duties disappear. They never do.

After the placement: now you are the employer

  1. Sign the contract

    Hours, pocket money, board and lodging, day off, language course.

  2. Accident insurance from day one

    UVG from the first working day, never retroactively.

  3. AHV within one month

    Board and lodging count towards the wage at CHF 990 per month.

  4. Health insurance within three months

    Your au pair takes out Swiss health insurance.

Frequently asked questions

Is an au pair agency mandatory in Switzerland?
Only for au pairs from third countries: their placement must run through an organisation licensed for job placement (Art. 48 VZAE). For au pairs from the EU/EFTA there is no agency requirement; you can search privately or via platforms. Within Switzerland, organisations like Pro Filia or Didac place between the language regions.
What does an au pair placement cost?
Most agencies do not publish their prices. One public example is Aupairlink: CHF 160 registration (plus CHF 40 outside the canton of Zurich) and CHF 1,490 placement (as of September 2026). Didac's website publishes no fee for families; the young people pay CHF 670 to 900 school fees per month. Always ask for the total costs including the cancellation policy. Your running costs as an employer (pocket money, board and lodging, social contributions) come on top.
How long does a placement take?
With EU/EFTA candidates it often takes a few weeks, because only the registration with the municipality is needed. With third countries it takes considerably longer: the cantonal permit and the visa come first, and not every canton admits third-country au pairs at all. Plan several months of lead time there.
What does the agency not do?
The placement usually ends with the match and, at most, support during the year. The employer is you: the employment contract, the AHV registration within one month, accident insurance from day one, the monthly payslip and the annual declaration all run in your name. Some agencies offer administration as an extra service; ask exactly what is included.
