Disclaimer: estimate based on public marginal rates (13.0% federal / 19.6% cantonal). The final deduction depends on denomination (church tax), extraordinary income, pension deductions, splitting and the municipality of residence. The cantonal tax office is responsible for a binding calculation.

For the tax office to recognize the deduction, the nanny must be officially employed.

Frequently asked questions

How high is the federal tax deduction for a nanny in Switzerland?
For direct federal tax, parents can currently deduct a maximum of CHF 25'800 per child per year for third-party childcare (2026, Art. 33 para. 3 DBG). This applies to children under 14, provided both parents are employed or in training and the nanny is officially employed and settled via AHV.
What is the difference between federal and cantonal deduction?
The federal government and the cantons have separate taxes and separate caps. The federal deduction is CHF 25'800/child. The cantons vary widely, from CHF 8'000 (SZ) through CHF 20'200 (LU) and CHF 25'300 (ZH) up to CHF 27'300 (GR); some mirror the federal amount (SG 26'800, GE 26'392). You can claim both deductions side by side.
Is the whole nanny wage deducted or only part of it?
Only the share that is actually childcare. If the nanny also does household work, cooking or cleaning, the tax office typically accepts around 50 to 70% of the gross wage as deductible. For pure childcare you can claim 100% up to the cap. When in doubt, a clear employment contract with a task list helps.
Which documents do I need for the tax deduction?
Salary statement or compensation-office certificate (under the simplified procedure), employment contract with task description, payment receipts (bank transfers, no cash payments) and proof of both parents' employment. Without official AHV registration the tax office does not recognize the deduction.
Is a nanny worthwhile tax-wise?
In high-tax cantons (GE, ZH, BE, VD) and for high-income families, the tax deduction can amount to CHF 4'000 to 10'000 per year depending on the marginal rate, which partly or fully covers the difference to daycare. In low-tax cantons (ZG, SZ) the effect is smaller. The calculator above shows your concrete estimate.
