Babysitter, Nanny & Childcare Courses in Switzerland: Which One Is Really Worth It?
We compared every important childcare course and certificate - from the Red Cross babysitting certificate to the federal apprenticeship. In 5 minutes you will learn what they cost, what they really get you and which one fits you. Honest and without the sales pitch.
The 30-second answer
- 1You do NOT need a certificate to babysit or work as a nanny - but a course builds trust and often means more pay.
- 2The classic for teenagers: the SRK babysitting course (10 hrs, CHF 100-250) - the certificate Swiss parents know.
- 3Almost a must: a child first aid course (emergencies with small children, CHF 120-220). Safety first.
- 4Start for free: the Clino Akademie nanny course (online, approx. 40 min, free) - shows you know the basics and your rights.
- 5Professional path: the Nanny SRK programme, kibesuisse childminder basic training or the apprenticeship as Childcare Specialist (Fachfrau/Fachmann Betreuung Kind EFZ).
Do you even need a certificate?
In short: no. In Switzerland there is no law requiring a certificate to babysit in a private family or work as a nanny. You may look after children without any training at all. There are, however, three clear exceptions where rules apply:
- Childminder (day mother): Anyone who regularly looks after children for pay, in their own home or the family's, usually needs a cantonal licence and completes the kibesuisse basic training.
- Daycare / crèche: Cantonal staffing requirements apply there (e.g. Childcare Specialist EFZ as a qualified worker).
- Au pair: The au pair status requires a mandatory language course (at least 120 hrs/year, paid by the host family).
So for the normal nanny or babysitter position in a family, it is not the law that counts, but the parents' trust. And this is exactly where courses help: they show that you are safe, prepared and serious - and they are often the argument for a higher hourly wage.
What does a course really get you?
More trust
Parents prefer to choose someone with a certificate - you find positions more easily.
More pay
With a certificate and experience you negotiate a higher hourly wage.
Safety for the child
A first aid course makes the difference in an emergency - every family values that.

Important: "recognition" does not mean the same thing everywhere. Federal (EFZ/EBA) is a state vocational qualification. Everything else is a provider or industry certificate - valuable for trust, but not a diploma.

My honest opinion
Don't waste money on expensive certificates that nobody in Switzerland knows. Start for free with the Clino course, do the SRK babysitting course and a child first aid course - that is the combination parents trust.
And most importantly: always make sure you are employed correctly. A certificate shows you mean it - proper registration is what really protects you.

Here is how it looks in everyday life - a nanny tells the family about her courses, and the family registers her correctly:
