Giving Your Cleaner Access: Key, Lockbox or Smart Lock Compared

Your cleaner or nanny comes while you're not home? Then you need a way to give her access. We compare a physical key, a lockbox, a smart lock and a concierge, in plain terms.

Answer in 30 seconds

The lowest-friction option is a smart lock with a recurring access code, for example every Tuesday from 9am to 1pm. If you prefer a physical key, always document the handover with a receipt.

  • A smart lock can be locked out again instantly if the employment ends.
  • A physical key works just as well if you document it with a receipt.
  • Giving access doesn't change your obligation to insure your household employee correctly.

How a recurring access code works

Providers such as Nuki, Yale, Tedee or Swisscom Smart Home let you create a code in the app that only works during set times, for example every Tuesday from 9am to 1pm. Outside that window, the code won't open the door. This is a purely informational overview, Clino doesn't currently partner with any of these providers.

Providers compared

Nuki

Nuki

from CHF 349

  • No extra hub needed, WiFi and Bluetooth are built in
  • Very fast unlocking, under 2 seconds
  • Battery is built in, after a few years the whole lock needs servicing
  • Installation is more involved since the existing cylinder gets replaced

Yale

Yale

approx. CHF 250 to 300

  • Keeps normal key access from outside, no emergency lockout
  • Simple installation without replacing the cylinder
  • Remote access needs the separate Connect Bridge, extra cost
  • Some models have no key override, hard to open if something fails
Official site
Tedee

Tedee

approx. CHF 190 to 280

  • Very compact, unobtrusive design
  • Installs in a few minutes without swapping the cylinder (Tedee GO)
  • Remote access away from home needs the extra Tedee Bridge
  • The Pro model currently has no Matter support

Swisscom

Swisscom Smart Home

No lock of its own in the lineup

  • One ecosystem for alarm, cameras and smart plugs in a single app
  • Swiss support and warranty, many households already have it
  • No door lock of its own, you still need a dedicated provider for the access code
  • Compatibility with individual smart lock brands isn't officially confirmed

You still have to insure her

🔑 For employers

Giving access doesn't change your duties as an employer: you still have to register and insure your household employee correctly. For an overview, see the employer duties in the household.

A camera only by agreement

You may not run a camera at the entrance without your household employee's knowledge and consent. Agree on placement and purpose together beforehand, it builds trust on both sides.

🤝 For household employees

Your employer uses a lockbox or a smart lock instead of a classic key? That doesn't change your rights. If you'd feel more comfortable with a physical key, you're always free to ask for a key handover receipt.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I just give my cleaner a house key?

Yes, that's not a legal problem. Still, a short key handover receipt is a good idea, so it's clear who received which key and when if a dispute ever comes up.

What if the key or the access code gets lost?

With a physical key, check whether you need to change the lock. With a smart lock, you simply delete the affected code in the app, no locksmith needed.

Am I allowed to install a camera at the entrance?

Only with your household employee's knowledge and consent. Agree on the placement and purpose together beforehand.

What do I do if the employment ends from one day to the next?

With a smart lock, you revoke access instantly in the app. With a physical key or a lockbox code, get it back or change it as soon as possible.

Does a smart lock still work without WiFi or during a power outage?

Most models have a mechanical backup key or a battery reserve for exactly this case. Ask about it specifically when buying one, and keep a spare key within reach.
