Mobile: from CHF 50 to CHF 10 per month

Most Swiss residents still pay CHF 40-60/month for unlimited data plans with Swisscom or Sunrise. But there are alternatives using exactly the same networks at a fraction of the price.

The key fact

GoMo GoMo (owned by Sunrise) offers unlimited data, calls and 5G for just CHF 9.95/mo with a lifetime price guarantee. Same network as Sunrise (which charges CHF 61.90). That's CHF 623 savings per year vs Sunrise.

Other affordable unlimited data options:

  • Digital Republic: CHF 13/mo, Sunrise network, no contract, eSIM available.
  • Wingo: CHF 24.95/mo, uses the Swisscom network (ideal for cheaper Swisscom coverage).
  • Salt Swiss XXL: CHF 27.95/mo online (normal price CHF 83.95). Lifetime price when ordering online.
  • Lidl Connect: CHF 24.90/mo (frequent promos at ~CHF 16.90), Salt network.

Note: Swisscom is raising prices by +CHF 1.90/mo from 1 April 2026. Existing customers have a special right of termination before that date.

Home internet: fibre from CHF 40/mo

Home internet is another area where you can easily save CHF 120-260/year simply by switching provider. Swisscom is the most expensive (CHF 61.80/mo from April 2026) but there are excellent alternatives.

Supermarket: Lidl & Aldi vs Migros & Coop

Switzerland has the highest food prices in Europe. But the difference between discount supermarkets (Lidl, Aldi) and Migros or Coop can amount to CHF 1,500-2,500 per year per person.

Key data (K-Tipp / bonus.ch 2025-2026)

  • 30-product basket: Lidl CHF 162 vs Migros CHF 170 (-5%)
  • 100-product basket: Aldi CHF 231 vs Coop CHF 251 (-8%)

Meal prep vs eating out: the biggest savings

Eating out every day in Switzerland is extremely expensive. A daily menu costs CHF 25-35, and a simple takeaway from Coop to Go or Migros Daily is around CHF 10-12. Cooking at home (meal prep) costs just CHF 3-5 per meal.

Meal prep tips for Switzerland

  • Sunday batch cooking: prepare 4-5 portions of rice/pasta with protein and veg. Freeze what you won't eat in 2-3 days.
  • Shop at Aldi/Lidl: rice, pasta, legumes, chicken, frozen veg. Weekly meal prep shop: CHF 25-35.
  • Initial investment: glass container set (~CHF 30) + thermal bag (~CHF 15).
  • Easy recipes: chili con carne, lentil curry, pasta bake, fried rice, wraps.

Insurance: the biggest savings potential

Mandatory health insurance (Krankenkasse) is the largest fixed cost after rent. The average 2026 premium is CHF 465/mo for adults (+4.4% vs 2025). But it can be hugely optimised.

Health insurance (Krankenkasse)

1

High deductible (CHF 2,500 vs CHF 300)

Savings: CHF 100-150/mo (CHF 1,200-1,800/year). Recommended if you rarely visit the doctor. With CHF 2,500 deductible, you only pay out of pocket for medical costs above that amount.

2

HMO or Telmed model

Savings: 15-30% vs the standard model (CHF 600-1,800/year). Telmed = call a medical hotline first. HMO = visit a partner medical centre. Same coverage, lower premium.

3

Remove accident cover

If you work 8+ hours/week, your employer covers accidents via UVG. Removing accident cover from your health insurance saves ~7-10% (CHF 420-560/year).

4

Compare providers annually

Difference between cheapest canton (Zug: CHF 317/mo) and most expensive (Geneva: CHF 562/mo): CHF 2,940/year. Even within the same canton, differences can be CHF 800+/year. Compare on comparis.ch or bonus.ch. Deadline: 30 November.

Domestic employment: Clino vs quitt

If you employ a domestic worker (cleaning, childcare, gardening), you're legally required to register them and pay social insurance. There are two main platforms:

Clinoquitt Comfortquitt Flat

Price/yearCHF 238.80CHF 150 + 5%CHF 990

Last checked: May 2026. Prices per publicly available provider information (https://www.quitt.ch/preise). Social-security contributions are separate and identical across providers — they are set by the state, not us. (last checked: 2026-05-05)

Annual difference Clino vs quitt Flat

CHF 751.20/year

Quitt Flat: CHF 990/year · Clino: CHF 238.80/year - same core features.

For salaries above CHF 1,450/mo, quitt Comfort isn't an option (salary limit). Quitt Flat costs CHF 990/year, Clino costs CHF 238.80/year - for the same core scope (payslips, contracts, social insurance declarations). With Clino you pay a flat CHF 19.90/mo regardless of salary.

Electricity and other fixed costs

Electricity in Switzerland drops ~4% in 2026 automatically. You can't currently choose your electricity provider freely (local monopoly), but there are ways to reduce consumption:

  • LED everywhere: replacing 10 halogen bulbs with LED saves ~CHF 100/year.
  • Power strips with switch: standby from TVs, computers and chargers costs ~CHF 80/year.
  • Wash at 30°C: 90% of washing energy goes to heating water. Savings: ~CHF 50/year.
  • Serafe (TV/radio fee): CHF 335/year, mandatory. Drops to CHF 312/year from 2027. Exemption only for AHV/IV supplementary benefit recipients.

Frequently asked questions

Is GoMo really reliable? Good coverage?

GoMo is owned by Sunrise and uses exactly the same 5G network. Coverage is identical to a CHF 61.90 Sunrise subscription. The only difference is no physical shop (everything online).

Is it worth going to Aldi/Lidl if one isn't nearby?

If you need to drive far, petrol costs can eat up the price difference. In that case, use M-Budget (Migros) and Prix Garantie (Coop), which match discounter prices on many basics.

When can I change health insurance provider?

The deadline to switch is 30 November for effectiveness from 1 January. Compare premiums in October when new rates are published on comparis.ch.

Do I need to register my cleaner even if she only comes 2h/week?

Yes, from the first franc. In Switzerland, all domestic employment must be registered and subject to AHV/IV/EO contributions. With Clino, the whole process takes under 10 minutes and costs just CHF 19.90/mo.

Is saving CHF 10,000/year realistic?

For someone paying Swisscom, eating out every day, shopping at Coop without looking at prices, and with unoptimised health insurance - yes, absolutely. The biggest levers are meal prep (~CHF 5,000) and health insurance (~CHF 3,000). Those two alone exceed CHF 8,000.
