Register a Babysitter, Nanny or Au Pair in Switzerland - Complete Guide 2026

Regular babysitter, live-in nanny, or au pair - the registration rules differ more than most parents realise. If someone regularly looks after your children for pay, you're already an employer under Swiss law. With all the obligations that come with it.

In short

For an adult carer you owe AHV from the first franc - in a private household there is no small-wage threshold. Only for under-25s are wages up to CHF 750 per year exempt. Nannies and au pairs almost always have to be registered.

  • The CHF 750 exempt limit for under-25s applies per employer, not per employee.
  • Occupational accident cover (BU) is always mandatory, NBU from 8 hours/week.
  • The simplified procedure works the same for babysitter, nanny and au pair.

AHV Obligation: When Must You Register?

The rule of thumb: for adult carers AHV applies from the first franc - in a private household there is no small-wage threshold. Only someone who, until the end of the year of their 25th birthday, earns no more than CHF 750 per year and employer is exempt.

This CHF 750 exempt limit for under-25s applies per employer, not per employee: if a young carer works for several families, each has its own limit. Once it is exceeded, the entire annual wage is liable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I really have to register a babysitter?
Yes. For adult babysitters AHV registration is mandatory from the first franc. Only under-25s are exempt up to CHF 750 per year and employer - many occasional teenage babysitters fall under this.
What's the difference between a nanny and babysitter for AHV?
Legally the framework is the same: adults are liable for AHV from the first franc, under-25s from CHF 750 per year. In practice a nanny is almost always above any limit, while a rare young babysitter is often below.
Does an au pair need a work permit?
Yes. Au pairs from EU/EFTA need a short-term residence permit (L). Au pairs from third countries need a work permit and must be aged 18-25.
Can I use the simplified procedure for my nanny?
Yes, the simplified procedure is available to all private households - for babysitters, nannies and au pairs alike, as long as annual salary doesn't exceed CHF 22,680.
What if my babysitter has an accident at our home?
Without accident insurance (UVG), you as the employer are personally liable for all costs - doctor visits, hospital stays, potentially disability pension. UVG costs around CHF 100-200/year; occupational accident cover is mandatory from the first hour, non-occupational cover additionally from 8h/week.
How much holiday does a nanny get?
At least 4 weeks per year (5 weeks for employees under 20). Public holidays don't count as vacation days. The holiday supplement is 8.33% for 4 weeks.
