23,000 Cleaners Seeking Work — but Only 50 Accept What a Household Offers

First in-depth analysis of the RAV platform job-room.ch reveals: Experienced cleaners are available and ready to start — but the system doesn't fit the private household. Language barriers, workload mismatch, and an invisible job title prevent matching.

Switzerland's RAV platform job-room.ch is the only public database of registered jobseekers. In April 2026, 178,479 people were registered. Clino has for the first time systematically analysed who is seeking work in cleaning and household services — with what experience, what desired workload, in which language, and in which canton.

The results reveal a paradox: Thousands of experienced professionals are seeking work, yet the system is designed for full-time positions — not for the 4–8 hours per week that a typical private household requires.

1. The Workload Paradox: 11,683 Professionals, but Only 50 for Private Households

A typical Swiss private household needs a cleaner for 4–8 hours per week — equivalent to a workload of 10–20%. How many of the 11,683 registered cleaners (keyword "Reinigung") accept such a workload?

99.6% of registered cleaners seek a higher workload than a private household typically offers. The RAV platform is built for full-time — the private household simply doesn't exist in this system.

Even with a generous definition of part-time (up to 50%), only 923 candidates are found — fewer than 8% of cleaners. The RAV system is structurally designed for commercial full-time positions and does not reflect the reality of private household employment.

2. No Beginners: 77% Have Over 3 Years of Experience

The assumption that cleaning work is unskilled and jobseekers are career starters is disproven by the data. The vast majority of registered cleaners are highly experienced.

9,043 out of 11,683 cleaners bring over three years of professional experience. At the same time, 6,763 (58%) are immediately available. There is a large pool of experienced, ready-to-deploy professionals — the bottleneck is not supply, but matching.

3. Three Languages, Three Worlds: The Invisible Language Barrier

Searching for "Reinigung" (German for cleaning) returns 11,683 results. But this picture is incomplete. Jobseekers from French-speaking Switzerland use "nettoyage", those from Ticino use "pulizia".

The French search ("nettoyage", 9,971) returns nearly as many results as the German one — despite German-speaking Switzerland having more than twice the population. Per capita, the registered cleaning market in Romandie is dramatically larger.

Searching only in German means missing 50% of the market. Switzerland's cleaning sector exists in three parallel worlds — the platform builds no bridge between them.

4. Per Capita, Vaud Has 3.5x More Cleaners Than Zurich

The cantonal analysis reveals a surprising distribution. Absolute numbers are misleading: Zurich leads only in the German-language search. When normalised by population, Romandie dominates.

Vaud alone has nearly as many registered cleaners as the top 3 German-speaking cantons combined. Per capita, it exceeds Zurich by a factor of 3.5.

The surprise: Aargau (1,872) ranks ahead of Bern (1,484) — despite Bern having 50% more residents. And Vaud (4,035) clearly surpasses Zurich (2,238), even though Zurich has nearly twice the population. The high per-capita rate in Romandie points to a more formalised — or more registration-intensive — cleaning market.

5. The "Putzfrau" Paradox: 6 out of 178,479

6
Results for 'Putzfrau' on job-room.ch
11,683 results for 'Reinigung' — a ratio of 1,947:1

"Putzfrau" is by far the most common search term used by Swiss households looking for cleaning help. Google Trends shows that "Putzfrau" is searched five times more often than "Reinigungskraft".

Yet on the RAV platform, only 6 out of 178,479 jobseekers use this term. The discrepancy has three causes:

  • Professionalisation:Jobseekers use "Reinigungsangestellte/r" (cleaning employee) — never the colloquial term.
  • Stigma:"Putzfrau" is perceived as demeaning.
  • Institutional language: RAV advisors use the ISCO classification.

Employers search for a "Putzfrau". Workers offer "Reinigung". This linguistic gap is symptomatic of the entire disconnect between private households and the labour market.

6. What the RAV Doesn't Show: The Skills Landscape

Many registered cleaners bring additional household competencies — cooking, ironing, childcare. But the RAV system has no job classification for "household all-rounder".

7. What the Numbers Mean

Methodological Note

These figures show only RAV-registered jobseekers — not the entire market. An estimated 80% of household work in Switzerland happens informally. The actual number of available cleaners is many times higher.

Three Structural Problems

  • Workload mismatch: 99.6% of cleaners seek a higher workload than a private household offers. The RAV system does not accommodate part-time work under 20%.
  • Language barrier: Three language regions, three separate labour markets, no cross-language search. 50% of cleaners are invisible when searching in German.
  • Terminology gap:Employers search for "Putzfrau", workers offer "Reinigung". 6 vs. 11,683 — a factor of 1,947.
