Why you must register your au pair
An au pair in a private household is an employment relationship too and must be registered with AHV — from the very first franc of pocket money. As the host family, you are the employer.
Without registration you risk fines up to CHF 10'000. On top of that, the au pair can run into residence-permit problems. If there’s an accident, nobody is liable.
Au pairs from abroad are generally subject to withholding tax. Under the VAV, withholding tax and social security contributions are settled together.
Our au pair from France had already arrived, but the paperwork still wasn’t done. With Clino we had the contract and AHV registration finished the same day.

Frequently asked questions about registering an au pair
Do I have to register my au pair with AHV?
Yes. An au pair arrangement counts as an employment relationship. The AHV obligation applies from the first franc of pocket money.
What does registration through Clino cost?
CHF 19.90 per month — a flat fee. The first 30 days are free, and nothing is charged before day 30.
How much can an au pair work?
A maximum of 30 hours per week including housework and childcare. Clino builds the payroll based on the actual hours worked.
Does my au pair need a residence permit?
Au pairs from EU/EFTA countries need a short-term L permit. Clino handles the payroll side — for the permit itself, contact the cantonal migration office.
Is withholding tax due?
Usually yes, since au pairs don’t hold a Swiss passport. Clino calculates the withholding tax automatically based on canton and residence status.
How much is the usual pocket money?
The recommendation is CHF 500–770 per month, plus room and board. Clino settles everything correctly — including benefits in kind for accommodation and meals.
What do host families need to know about the permit?
Every host family needs a short-term L permit (EU/EFTA) or a visa (third countries) for their au pair. Registration with the migration office happens before work starts. Clino creates the employment contract you need for the permit, and calculates UVG insurance and withholding tax correctly.
